September 2014

In celebration of World Rhino Day on 22 September, I was invited to talk to the students at the Elkanah Blouberg Campus. I took along a little surprise guest - Lilitha! The children loved meeting her and just wanted to hug her and hold her!

Thank you for the invitation, Mrs Childes!

June 2014

Lilitha came home for a visit!
Lilitha has been travelling around South Africa visiting schools to raise awareness for our rhinos. She will be visiting Cape Town for a little while before she heads up the east coast of South Africa again.
Take a look at this video:

Just listen to these talented girls...
Some of the Grade 5's wrote rhino poems. This group of girls took Taylor Swift's 'Trouble' and made it their own - with a message for poachers!

Here is a poem written by another group of girls:

DigiDesign

It was Digital Design time again and over two full days a group of eleven Grade 5s used the school iPads and computers to do different projects to try and help our rhinos:

Word Clouds with the CloudArt app:
We had a wonderful discussion about rhinos and then we brainstormed emotive words to describe rhinos and poaching in South Africa. These were typed into the CloudArt app on the iPads and this is what the result was:

Planning our videos using the Popplet app:
The students were tasked with creating a rhino appeal video which also had to contain rhino facts and information which they had to research. They had to plan their videos by mind mapping their ideas using Popplet. They worked really well!

Videos with iMovie:
The students had to use the iPads to video their rhino appeal videos and then edit them in iMovie. They LOVED this activity and really took it seriously. They took their time to create very effective videos with images, video and music. Here they are:

Letters to President Zuma:

Once again we wrote letters to our President to appeal to him to take a stand against rhino poaching in our country. It was interesting to see how different the letters were from those written by the first group of students, in June:

Glogster posters – Save Our Rhinos!

To end off the two-day DigiDesign activities, the students created Save Our Rhino posters with GlogsterEdu! This is still a work in progress.

FUNDRAISING AT THE LOCAL SPUR STEAK RANCH

On the 19th of June a group of our Grade 6 students worked at the San Miguel Spur Steak Ranch to raise money for Rock 'n Ride 4 Rhino. They waited on tables were paid in tips and also received a pecentage of their takings. We look forward to hearing how much they raised in total! Well done to these boys and girls!
A huge thanks to Cleo in the Eagles class who came up with the idea and co-ordinated the whole evening, and to the management and staff of the San Miguel Spur for enabling this to happen!

Here are some photos from the evening:

ROOTING-FOR-RHINO-SCHOOL-ROUTE CHALLENGE:

On Monday, 29 October 2012, despite a gale force South Easter, we managed to form our human rhino on the school field. A total of 414 pupils from Elkanah House Sunningdale Preparatory and Senior Primary participated and we are proud of the rhino we made.

With pride we donated the amount of R3198.50 for the Rooting-for-Rhino-School-Route Challenge. We truly hope that this money will help to make a difference in the fight against rhino poaching in South Africa.

Here is our beautiful rhino:

We received this lovely e-certificate for our efforts:
