Makulu arrived in Racine at our school even before the students! We enjoyed having his presence to remind us to be thoughtful in how we treat animals and to educate each other on making good choices. He spent time on Mrs. Stewarts desk helping to keep the students on task (he has a large tusk you know!) There are about 130 students in Mrs. Stewarts classes so he had his work cut out for him!
He learned much about science safety in the lab and in the field. He along with the students learned that people are not always kind to animals and that they would kill animals just to get the horn; that makes us all sad. Some of the students wondered why people would be so mean.
We also learned about scientists like Jane Goodall who worked hard to educate people and stop the pouching.
