Who Has Visited Us?
Dec 2012 - Mar 2015
Apr 2015 -
St Andrew's School, Bloemfontein, RSA
A SWEET 'HELLO' GRUNT
from Bloemfontein in the Free State, SOUTH AFRICA!
During 2013, along with winning COMMUNITY INSTITUTION of the year,
St Andrew's School celebrated its 150th birthday!
We extended an invitation to Lilitha, but she was still very busy spreading her word elsewhere in this beautiful country of ours.
by her efforts, we joined hands with Loch Logan Waterfront Mall, students from the University of the Free State as well as student-chefs from the Food and Beverage Institute who chose to build a massive CHOCOLATE RHINO in celebration of WORLD RHINO DAY!
We knew that Lilitha would, in her absence, be pleased with our getting started on 'creating awareness'.
Taken from VOLKSBLAD newspaper, 15 Sept 2013
Miss Cooper, our teacher-in-charge of our INTERACT CLUB also visited the Schreiner Karoo Writers Festival in Cradock where she attended the launch of the anthology FOR A RHINO IN A SHRINKING WORLD. She met Harry Owen and the illustrator Sally Scott.
Back home we gave our junior school boys visual feedback in a slide presentation on the CHOCOLATE RHINO and Miss Cooper's trip down to the Karoo. We recited poems, took a moment to appreciate Sally Scott's illustrations and informed the boys that Mrs de Gouveia, who had attended a technology conference in Bloemfontein, had registered our school for the TRAVELLING RHINO project.
Our boys now knew that Lilitha was to arrive very soon in 2014.
We were so excited!
OUR GRACIOUS LADY LILITHA IS HERE!
Lilitha finally arrived on Thursday, 20 March 2014. Our Junior Interact members had the privilege of opening up our post. We presented Lilitha's arrival to the rest of the junior school during one of our daily fifteen minute Chapel sessions. Attached find this presentation which outlined Lilitha's expectations. Meet our headmaster, Mr Chris Thomas and our Chaplain, Fr Deon Lombard in our Anglican Chapel
MEET OUR WONDERFUL TEACHERS AND BOYS
It was amazing how each teacher embraced this project,
motivating our boys to participate and make space in their hearts for the plight of the rhino.
Most instrumental, was our wonderful Music, Art & Drama teacher, Mrs Swart.
We summarised each grade's contribution through these A4 visuals and
attached them to our Interact communication board for all parents and visitors to see
Gr1: Susan Blair and Celeste Debbo. Gr2: Jenny de Gouveia and Rita Botha. Gr3: Denise Strydom and Marizel Victor
Gr4: Irene Lubbe and JP le Roux. Gr5: Mizanne Segal and Lorna Cunningham. Gr6: Ulrika Reinecke and Pierre Grobler
Lilitha visits TeachMeet
Teachers from all over the Free State who attended TeachMeet, led by Sarietjie Musgrave, at the University of the Fr
ee State, were introduced to Lilitha's project
Lilitha visits our Outreach
Lilitha traveled w
ith our Friday Sandwich cargo to St Mary's School in Bochabela
where Dr Redpath shared the project with her learners
Every day is beautiful, but this day was extraordinary,
as we gathered to read an inspiring message sent to us by Mark Boucher (South African wicket keeper),
set message-filled balloons free and raised a crash of rhino funds!
filled with good memories, accompanied Lilitha on her way to the next school.
THANK YOU LILITHA FOR HELPING US, HELP YOU!
OUR MISSION CONTINUES
We moved our display to the Loch Logan Waterfront Mall for six weeks. One Saturday morning, shoppers donated R400-00 in the hour spent talking to them. With the assistance of the Ons Stad newspaper we challenged all schools in our province to raise awareness and to collect funds.
TEN 2 ONE CHALLENGE
Tim Vuyk is cycling 10km for every rhino that was poached last year. We invited him to come and inspire us with details of his journey which starts in Hogsback in the Eastern Cape on the 1st July 2014. He will push pedals through Bloemfontein, into Gauteng and up into Zimbabwe where he will cross Botswana to get to Namibia. Find more details on
GLOBAL MARCH FOR ELEPHANTS AND RHINOS
4th October 2014.
We have linked up with Advocate Antoinette Ferreira who is an environmental prosecutor that deals with rhino poaching cases and other environmental crimes in the Free State. She is going to organise a march through Bloemfontein which will then, to date (17 June), mark us as the 88th city in the world that will participate.
